There’s cool and arty and then there’s this place. It’s a boutique hotel disguised as a modern art museum and, in fact, a group of Singaporean artists designed the rooms. A former row of shophouses dating back to the 1920s, the outside is old world and the inside an eclectic mix of everything else. Some rooms have murals; others photo montages or wall poetry. Room décor will surprise you, with pieces like dentist's chairs, chrome tubs, and four-poster beds. Room amenities will please you, from free non-alcoholic drinks in your minibar to free wireless and free local calls. Brand-ophiles will appreciate the Ploh bedding, Kiehl's toiletries, and Nespresso coffee machine in the rooms. There’s a modern Cantonese restaurant within the hotel and next door is the self-consciously posh and fabulous Restaurant André, serving tiny portions of artfully presented high-brow French cuisine by the venue’s namesake (André Chiang).
