If you find yourself trapped in this grubby little place, the two best hotels are Hotel Carelys, 1/2 block south of the church (tel. 505/2583-0389), and Cabinas Leyko, 2 blocks east of the police station (tel. 505/2583-0354). Very basic rooms range from $20 to $50.
Solentiname Islands
There are many families on both Isla Mancarrón and Isla Elvis Chavarría that open their doors to strangers and rent rooms in a homestay fashion. Look around for signs posted outside these houses. Bear in mind that wherever you choose to stay will also be where you will eat, as the islands have no dining scene. El Buen Amigo, located in the community center on Isla Mancarrón (tel. 505/8869-6619), offers basic rooms for $12 per person. Villa Esperanza, next to the community center on Isla Mancarrón (tel. 505/2583-9020), is a step up in comfort and offers rooms for $25 per person.
