The Corso Étterem Várkerület 73 (tel. 99/340-990) is open Monday to Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 11am-4pm. Tucked away in a courtyard, you have to walk up the ramp to find this little hideaway dining venue. We attempted to dine here on a Sunday, but every table both inside and on their terrace was full. Looking over people's shoulders as we hunted for a table, we noticed the generous portions. This and a peak at the menu prices (all under 980 Ft) made it obvious why they were filled to capacity. Note that they do not speak English and the menu is only translated into German.
Erhardt Étterem is at Balfi u. 10. (tel. 99/506-711). Serving times are Monday to Thursday 11:30am-11pm, Friday and Saturday 11:30am-midnight, Sunday 11:30am-10pm. The foundation of the building may date back to the 16th century, but the food and service are very modern. Weather permitting, sit in the garden courtyard area surrounded by historic wall fortifications. Inside the restaurant are delightful sectioned rooms for intimacy and privacy when dining. I highly recommend the turkey medallions stuffed with French plums and bacon, served with Princess potatoes. Not only did both of our dinners look like models from a gourmet magazine, the flavors would please the fussiest of chefs. They also offer wine tastings of Sopron wines in their wine cellar for small to large groups.
Jégverem Fogadó is conveniently located at Jégverem u. 1 (tel. 99/510-113; www.jegverem.hu). An outer courtyard dining area is partially covered with a red tiled overhang along the perimeter. Inside, dining is pleasantly old fashioned. If you dine here, I suggest you avoid a starter as the meals are so humongous, you will have plenty of leftovers. My layered potatoes with sausage also had two extra large pork cutlets on top and were served in a baking pan that could normally serve four. As good as it was, I could barely put a dent in it. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 11am-11pm, Friday and Saturday 11am-midnight, and Sunday 11am-10pm.
