Visitor Information
The tourist office in Sorrento is at Via de Maio 35, off Piazza Tasso (www.sorrentotourism.com; (tel) 081-8074033); it’s open Monday to Friday 9am to 4:15pm; in summer it’s also open on Saturday mornings. Positano’s tourist office is near the beach at Via del Saracino 4 (www.aziendaturismopositano.it; (tel) 089-875067), and is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday until 2pm, with shorter hours in winter. In Amalfi, the tourist office is near the port at Corso della Repubbliche Marinare 27 (www.amalfitouristoffice.it; (tel) 089-871107) and is open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and 2 to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm. Ravello’s tourist office, Via Roma 18 (www.ravellotime.it), is open daily 9am to 7pm; November to May it closes at 6pm.
Getting There
Sorrento is connected to most other destinations in the region by the Circumvesuviana railway (tel. 800-053939; www.vesuviana.it), and the ride takes about 50 minutes from Naples. SITA (tel. 089 405145; www.sitabus.it) offers frequent bus service to Sorrento from Naples, Amalfi, Positano, and Salerno. Curreri Viaggi (tel. 081-8015420; www.curreriviaggi.it) maintains routes from Naples's Capodichino Airport, as well as from Rome and Naples, with stops in Castellammare di Stabia, Vico Equense, Meta, Piano di Sorrento, and Sant'Agnello. The ride to Sorrento from Naples takes about 1 hour and costs 10€; from Rome it is about 3 1/2 hours and costs 16€. Marozzi (tel. 080-5790111; www.marozzivt.it) has daily connections from Rome to Sorrento with stops in Naples, Pompeii, Castellammare di Stabia, and Vico Equense.
In summer, ferries and hydrofoils are a pleasant way to travel. LMP-Linee Marittime Partenopee (tel. 081-5513236; www.consorziolmp.it), NLG-Navigazione Libera del Golfo (tel. 081-8071812; www.navlib.it), and Linee Lauro (tel. 081-4972222; www.alilauro.it) make daily runs to and from Naples, Ischia, and Capri. Caremar (tel. 199-116655; www.caremar.it) also serves Capri; and Volaviamare (tel. 081-4972291; www.volaviamare.it) makes runs from Amalfi and Positano. Metrò del Mare, at the Marina Piccola downtown (tel. 199-600700; www.metrodelmare.net), is a summer-only commuter ferry serving the whole coast between Salerno and Bacoli.
Taxis offer a flat rate of 100€ to Sorrento from Naples, and car service can be arranged in advance with 2golfi, Via Deserto 30/e, 80064 Sant'Agata sui due Golfi (tel. 339-8307748 or 339-3494479; www.duegolficarservice.it). Curreri Viaggi offers a shuttle service (120€ for four passengers).
By car, take the exit for CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA off autostrada A3, and then follow signs for VICO EQUENSE, META DI SORRENTO, and SORRENTO; these will lead you to route SS 145, the Sorrento peninsula's coastal road.
Getting Around
SITA buses leave from Sorrento frequently throughout the day, more often in summer than winter, for the rather thrilling ride around the hairpin turns on the coast road to Positano and Amalfi; a one-way fare is 1.40€. From Amalfi, buses leave for Ravello from the terminal at the waterfront at Piazza Flavio Gioia almost every hour 7am to 10pm, costing 1.10€ one-way. The Circumvesuviana railway is convenient, as are ferries to harbors along the coast. Another option is to rent a boat or join a tour group.
You will find taxi stands at the harbor, on Piazza Tasso (both tel. 081-8782204), and in the adjacent village of Sant'Agnello (tel. 081-8781428).
