Getting There

By Air -- Continental Airlines (tel. 800/523-3273; www.continental.com) flies into the Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake (tel. 518/891-4600), in the northern part of the park. Other nearby airports include Burlington, Vermont (1 hr. from the eastern section of the region), Albany (1 hr. from the southern border), and Montreal (1 hr. from Plattsburg).

By Bus -- Adirondack Trailways (tel. 800/776-7548; www.trailwaysny.com) serves Lake George, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Keene Valley, Schroon Lake, Warrensburg, Malone, Massena, Potsdam, and Canton. The daily service from Albany to Lake Placid takes 4 hours.

By Car -- You'll likely drive here; north of Albany, I-87 becomes the Adirondack Northway and speeds you along the eastern edge of the park. Enterprise (tel. 800/325-8007) and Hertz (tel. 800/654-3131) operate out of Glens Falls (Queensbury) and Utica. (Enterprise's Glens Falls location will pick you up and deliver you to their office without charge.) Both also have rental desks at the Adirondack Regional Airport with limited hours.

By Train -- Amtrak (tel. 800/872-7245; www.amtrak.com) stops in Glens Falls, Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Port Henry, Westport, Port Kent, Plattsburgh, and Rouses Point.

By Ferry -- Lake Champlain ferries (tel. 802/864-9804; www.ferries.com) go from Grand Isle, Vermont, to Plattsburgh, New York; Burlington, Vermont, to Port Kent, New York; and Charlotte, Vermont, to Essex, New York. Schedule depends on season.

Visitor Information

The Adirondack Regional Tourism Council (tel. 800/487-6867 or 518/846-8016; www.visitadirondacks.com) runs the Beekmantown Gateway Information Center on I-87 southbound between exits 41 and 40, which is open daily year-round, from 8am to 5pm; from Memorial Day to Labor Day, it's open later. For information on Lake George, you can also contact Warren County Tourism, Municipal Center, 1340 State Rte. 9, Lake George (tel. 800/95-VISIT; www.visitlakegeorge.com). Farther west in the region, contact Inlet Information (tel. 866/GO-INLET; www.inletny.com) or Old Forge Tourism (tel. 315/369-6983; www.oldforgeny.com).
