If we had a four-star rating, I’d give it to Tu Tu’ Tun. For a truly memorable southern Oregon experience, this sublime lodge on the sublimely beautiful Rogue River, 7 miles east of Gold Beach, can’t be beat. Designed by architects, and open since 1970, Tu Tu’ Tun’s rooms all have balconies or patios that look out on a wide stretch of one of Oregon’s most scenic rivers. The hotel has rooms that are luxuriously comfortable, with handcrafted wood detailing, Arts and Crafts–style furnishings, all-natural fabrics, and a romantic, sophisticated ambience that sets it apart from every other hotel in the area. Spring for a fireplace room if you can—these are wood-burning fireplaces—and for added allure, book one of the rooms with an outdoor soaking tub. All kinds of amenities are part of the Tu Tu’ Tun experience, including evening wine and hors d’oeuvres and a delicious breakfast. For an additional fee you can enjoy dinner (summer only) at communal tables that seat eight. The lobby/lounge area with its big fireplace and Arts and Crafts–style furniture leads out to a patio area overlooking an outdoor pool and lawn that in turn leads down to a stretch of the beach. Jet boats arrive at the lodge’s dock in the summer, so guests can take a ride up the river from here. If you’re looking for the best, this is it.
