The Temple of Artemis Orthia

Frommer's Staff

If you head out of Sparta on the Tripolis road, you'll see a small yellow sign for the Temple of Artemis Orthia, where little Spartan boys were whipped to learn courage and endurance. The site, which dates from the 10th century B.C. but was extensively remodeled by the Romans, is often crowded with Gypsy children aggressively begging for money. Consequently, this can be an unpleasant place to visit, especially alone.
