Just inside the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, next to the Silver Gate and close to the open-air market, this hotel offers 12 rooms, some with views onto the cathedral. The units are of various configurations, as it’s an old building in a UNESCO-protected area and can’t be altered, subsequently limiting the room sizes and availability of natural light. That said, the spaces are homey and comfortable, with wooden floors, and some with exposed ancient stonework (pieces of the Roman palace walls). Besides location, the main draw here is the ground-floor Tifani restaurant, with outdoor tables on a limestone terrace right next to the palace walls. Yes, breakfast at Tifani is a fine way to start the day, and the creative Mediterranean cuisine served at lunch and dinner is beautifully presented and reasonably priced. The staff is friendly, professional, and full of locals’ advice about things to see and do.
