Museums
A couple of small museums are worth a look if you have the time. The Reneé Cushman Art Museum is housed in the LDS (Mormon) Church in Springerville. It consists of one woman's personal collection of European art and antiques. Among the works are an etching attributed to Rembrandt and three pen-and-ink drawings by Tiepolo. The antique furniture dates back to the Renaissance. The museum is open by appointment only; admission is free. Local history and old automated musical instruments are the focus of the Little House Museum at X Diamond Ranch (www.xdiamondranch.net; tel. 928/333-2286), 7 miles west of Eagar on South Fork Rd., off Ariz. 260. This working cattle ranch was founded in the 1880s by John and Molly Butler (of Molly Butler’s Lodge in Greer) and is still run by the family. Tales of colorful Wild West characters as told by the guide are as much a part of the museum as the displays. Museum visits are by reservation only and cost $10 for adults and $4 for kids 11 and under. The X Diamond Ranch also has a Native American archaeological site that is open to the public. Combination museum and archaeological site tours are $14 adults, $7 children.
