Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

If Jay-Z and Beyoncé were born a century before, this is where they would live. The winter residence of Baronne Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, this Italianate villa was completed in 1912 according to the finicky specifications of its ultra-rich owner. Today the pink edifice preserves an eclectic collection, gathered over her lifetime: 18th-century furniture, Tiepolo ceilings, tapestries from Gobelin, a games table gifted from Marie-Antoinette (Ephrussi’s hero) to a friend, and tiny seats for her beloved poodles. The nine themed gardens, from Florentine to Japanese, are a particular delight. The attractive tea salon, which overlooks the Bay of Villefranche, is run by Aude Filipowski, a chef who learnt her trade at the Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat. For 31€ visitors can expect a superb lunch, including coffee and wine, as well as the price of an entrance ticket. An additional new family ticket welcomes two adults plus two children under 17 for the combined price of 45€.
