Getting There

St. Johann lies directly on the main rail line connecting Munich and Salzburg with Klagenfurt, Venice, and Trieste. Between 4:50am and 10:20pm, these trains depart from Salzburg's Hauptbahnhof no more than 2 hours apart (trip time: 1 hr. and 8 min., when no train changes en route). If the delay between trains poses an inconvenience, consider taking one of the more frequent trains between Salzburg and the important railway junction of Schwarzach-St. Veit, and then backtrack, taking a taxi or bus the 5km (3 miles) to St. Johann. For rail information in Salzburg, call tel. 05/1717 (www.oebb.at).

Unless you're coming in from one of the neighboring villages, arriving by bus in St. Johann isn't practical because of the multiple transfers required from such cities as Salzburg and Innsbruck.

If you're driving, head south from Salzburg on the A10, and then cut southwest at the junction with Route 311.
