Fondation Maeght
A museum you would travel thousands of miles to visit. Established by Parisian art dealers Aimé and Marguerite Maeght in 1964, this avant-garde building houses one of the most impressive modern art collections in Europe. It was Spanish architect José Luis Sert who designed the pagoda-like exhibition space, ensuring the artwork it displays sits in perfect harmony with the surrounding pine-studded woods. In the gardens, colorful Alexander Calder installations are clustered with skinny bronze sculptures by Alberto Giacometti. A rotating selection of artworks is displayed over the various levels inside, showcasing key pieces by artists like Matisse, Chagall, Bonnard, and Léger. In celebration of the Fondation’s 60th anniversary, summer 2024 sees the inauguration of two brand-new galleries, designed by architect Silvio d’Ascia and overlooking the surrounding pine forests.
