Set on 13 acres of beach next to Sand Key Park, this nine-story Spanish-style hotel is proof that not all Sheratons are schlocky. Its location only a 450-foot walk across the broad beach in front of the hotel to the water’s edge is ideal. It also happens to be the only resort in the area that doesn’t charge the dreaded resort fee and offers free parking. The pool deck has a bar, restaurant, and fire pits for those rare chilly nights. Moderately spacious guest rooms are bright, clean, and well-maintained, with balconies or patios with views of the Gulf or the bay. The gym is on the top floor, affording great workout views. For those who love a little scandal, room no. 538 was the one where infamous former Praise the Lord Ministry leader Jim Bakker was busted with his then-assistant Jessica Hahn. Google it if you’re unfamiliar. It’s titillating.
