Nonagenarian Zora Galvin has been making hand-crafted leather sandals in Charlotte Amalie for 60 years. In addition to her classic-looking, full-grain, “practically indestructible” (says one fan) sandals custom-fit to your feet, Zora also offers a line of solidly practical, toe-enclosed footwear that the islanders call “limin’ shoes.” The leather comes straight from the cattle yards of Chicago, and ladies and gents in the know make this their first stop on arrival in the islands (the shoes take 4 to 6 days to complete) to have Zora draw a rough pattern of their feet on butcher paper (“I still can’t draw a foot,” Zora says). Her circa-1860s shop, a former U.S. consulate, carries the delightful canvas “monster” bags and backpacks of another crafty nonagenarian—Zora’s good friend, collagist, and children’s book author Diane Redfield Massie—who works on her whimsical creations upstairs in the airy loft. Also in the mix are good hand-knotted Oriental rugs and dhurries and ethereal printed kirtas for sipping guavaberry wine on breezy patios. You might spot something from Zora’s equally talented daughters, painter Shansi Miller and artisan Timisa Miller, who creates handmade jewelry and luminescent works of dichroic glass. (Zora also for years conducted the Community Band at the Carnival parades and other events with a bougainvillea-draped baton.) If you swoon for all things hand-crafted, top-quality, and made-with-love,this is the mother lode.
