Visitor Information -- Stellenbosch Tourism Bureau, 36 Market St. (tel. 021/883-3584; www.stellenboschtourism.co.za; summer Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm; winter Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9:30am-2pm, Sun 10am-2pm), is by far the most helpful in the Winelands, so head to their office as soon as you arrive. They'll provide expert advice on where to stay and what to do, and they distribute a Discover Stellenbosch on Foot leaflet, describing more than 60 historical sites with accompanying text. Adjacent is the Adventure Centre (tel. 021/882-8112; www.adventureshop.co.za), offering a huge variety of activities in the region.

Guided Tours -- In Town -- Guided walking tours (R90 per person; 90 min.) led by Sandra Krige (tel. 021/887-9150 or 083/218-1310; hkrige@iafrica.com) depart the tourist bureau every weekday at 10am and 3pm (Sat-Sun by appointment). Contact Sandra for private early-morning and twilight history walks. The town center is small enough to explore on foot, but you can also rent a bicycle from Piet se Fiets (tel. 021/887-3042; R20 per hour, R80 per day).

To Wine Estates -- Note that if you don't want to drive, you can visit five Stellenbosch wine estates by using the hop-on, hop-off Vinehopper bus (tel. 021/882-8112; www.vinehopper.co.za; R150 per person, excluding tasting fees).
