Squeezing Through Smugglers' Notch

Don't forget to drive through Smugglers' Notch, Stowe's most scenic point accessible without skis. From the center of town, follow Route 108 west about 5 miles, past all the resorts. The road, closed in winter, begins to hairpin and climb its way through the notch. You can park and hike the Long Trail or one of several others of varying degree of difficulty up Mt. Mansfield; a handy information booth right near the top of the pass is staffed from spring through summer by helpful folks. Remember to sign in to the log book if you're doing a long hike -- some of the trails are a bit hairy, and weather can change up top. In fall, the road slows to a crawl with leaf-peepers: an eye-popping but sloooow ride.
