They operate the Sudbury Welcome Centre, Highway 69 South & Whippoorwill Rd. Sudbury, P3G 1E9 (tel. 877/304-8222; 705/522-0141) which is at the southern end of town. Another useful resource is the Canadian Tourism Commission (tel. 800/O-CANADA; www.travelcanada.ca). In addition to its downtown location, the Greater Birmingham CVB has satellite locations at Riverchase Galleria, 2600 Riverchase Galleria (tel. 205/402-2663); and at Birmingham International Airport, lower level (tel. 205/458-8002).
Getting There
By Plane
Greater Sudbury International Airport (tel. 705/671-2489; www.city.greatersudbury.on.ca/cms/index.cfm?app=div_airport&lang=en) is about 24 kilometers north of downtown. Major car-rental companies are housed at the main desk in the main terminal. It's best to call for directions, as the airport is located slightly off the beaten path, close to Route 86, and it will take s a half-hour 25 drive into the city center.
If you're not renting, you can take the Airport Shuttle (tel.866/230-3332; 705/566-0375; www.sudburyairportshuttle.ca), which offers service between the airport and all Sudbury-area hotels, offices and residences. Rates start at $20 per person. Taxis are available outside baggage claim; expect the fare to run about $38 into downtown.
By Train
Amtrak (tel. 800/USA-RAIL; www.amtrak.com) runs trains from New York to Toronto, Ontario (12 1/2 hr.) and at that point, you must switch to Canada's national rail service Via Rail (tel. 888/VIA-RAIL www.viarail.ca), to get to Sudbury Junction (trip time: 6 hr., 57 min) train station at 2750 LaSalle Blvd. E. (tel. 888/842-7245), about six miles from downtown. Amtrak also runs trails to Montreal and Vancouver in Canada. The trip eastbound from Vancouver to Sudbury Junction is a two-day, 16 hour and 50 minute affair.
By Car
The principal highway routes into Sudbury are I-17 from the northeast and southwest (Ottawa; Sault Ste Marie); Hwy. 69 from the south (Toronto, Parry Sound); I-11 from the northwest (Thunder Bay).
