New Synagogue
A tribute to the once-thriving Jewish community in Szeged, this synagogue was built in 1907. Created in a number of architectural styles, it is a monumental 49m (161 ft) tall Moorish Art Nouveau building. The space between the right and left exterior curve of the arch is an ornamentally decorated space. In the enclosing right angle is a rib-like wall in Gothic style, directly above an organ."Roman columns support the galleries. The most beautiful part is the dome, but everywhere you look is awe-inspiring. This is considered the masterpiece of architect Lipot Baumhorn, who was a disciple of Ödön Lechner and the most prolific and renowned synagogue architect in modern Europe. It occupies a full block, making it the second-largest synagogue in Hungary. The synagogue is fully functioning and holds services at 6pm every Friday.
If you find the synagogue closed when it should be open, go to the address that's posted near the entrance and the caretaker will open the synagogue for you.
