The most famous of Taipei's temples, lively Longshan was established in 1738 and provides the quintessential Taiwanese temple experience. It was dedicated to Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, and her icon in the main hall famously survived the WWII Allied bombings. As is typical in Taiwan, Longshan also has shrines to Taoist deities, all of which bustle with worshippers. Afterward wander into Herb Alley, full of medicinal bundles of aloe and ginseng. In the evening visit the nearby Huaxi nightmarket and Snake Alley for a snake snack.
