For a taste of Taiwan's wild side just 30 minutes from the city, Yangmingshan is a must. Collect a map at the visitor center near the park entrance and hike to craggy peaks, fluorescent fumeroles and hot springs. Given its proximity to Taipei, Yangmingshan feels very rugged and remote; an easier way to see the park is on the hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus that stops at the major points of interest. Bring a picnic lunch or dine at one of the excellent farm restaurants around Bamboo Lake.
