Hotels in Taipei
Like most global capitals, Taipei has a number of international chains, including Sheraton (www.sheraton-taipei.com), Shangri-La (www.shangri-la.com) and Westin (www.westin.com.tw), which offer the same solid rooms, facilities and service as elsewhere. Where Taipei differs is in the number of unique boutique hotels, which present intimate luxury, often at competitive prices. This guide focuses on these as well as a selection of midrange hotels. The options are more limited for budget travelers. Note that a single room usually means a queen-sized bed in a smaller room, suitable for couples.

amba Taipei Ximeng
The hip, more casual off-shoot of the stuffy, um I mean 5-star, Ambassador chain of hotels, the amba was the very first Taiwan hotel to be set in a shopping mall. Well, it had to happen sometime. It's set in the heart of the frenetic but fun Ximending shpping area, but because its…$$Ximending - Hotel
Ambience Hotel Taipei
In this case, the ambiance seems to be taken from the Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange. Most of the furnishings, walls, and floors are done in a dazzling, shiny white. Guestrooms are divided into standard, deluxe, elite, and suite, but the only difference between the first two—besides…$$Section 1 - Hotel
City Suites Hotel
The City Suites have the serenity—and carefully curated minimalism—of a Japanese rock garden. In fact, I’d say the ambiance here is far more Japanese than Chinese, from the use of slate and natural materials to the hushed-if-gracious service. The lobby is grand, the rooms less so,…$$$Zongshan - Hotel
Han She Hotel
Don't be frightened by the odd location of this hotel, set in a narrow alley off a main shopping thoroughfare, or by the fact that the entryway features a table of plastic wrapped food to advertise the restaurant there. Head up to the lobby where the gracious, English-speaking staff…$Ximending - Hotel
Hotel Eclat
It's pricey, but the Hotel Eclat has an élan that no other hotel in Taipei can match. The lobby is adorned with museum-quality-yet-whimsical pieces of art (including a Salvador Dali sculpture). The two on-site restaurants (they provide room service) are genuinely gourmet. And the…$$$Da'an District, Section 1 - Hotel
Howard Plaza Hotel
The Howard Plaza attracts a lot of tour groups, but don't hold that against it. The rooms were all recently upgraded, and they have marble-clad bathrooms (complete with tushy-warming—and tushy-cleaning—Japanese toilets), dignified tan and brown boxy modern furnishings, and blackout…$$Da'an District - Hotel
Hsuan Mei Hotel
Click one button and the curtains open. The second, third, and fourth buttons control the various lights in the room, while another handles the TV. And you can click away from the comfort of your bed, giving what looks on first glance to be a rather standard, maybe even old-fashioned…$$Jhongshan District Taipei City - Hotel
Royal Seasons Hotel Taipei
Welcome to Paris…or perhaps Budapest. This two-building Taiwanese hotel looks to the Europe of the 1890s for its style, which means your bedroom may boast a four-poster bed, elaborately draped curtains, and a dresser topped with fine marble. Bathrooms are a bit more modern, but also…$$Zhongshan - Hotel
The Green World Hostel
As locals know, you often find the best things hidden away in Taipei's skyscrapers. That's the case with this relatively new hostel/hotel founded in May 2013 and located on the 7th floor of an office building. The staff is super-friendly, and the private rooms, with their wall sized…$Da'an District
