Tampa Bay History Center
No dusty artifacts behind glass here! This engaging, and highly interactive, 60,000-square-foot museum brings to life some 500 years of recorded history, and 12,000 years of human habitation in the region. That includes telling the tales of the sports legends who called Florida home, as well as the tycoons who reshaped the state, the Tocobaga people who lived here for centuries, the cigar makers who rolled in a new industry to Ybor City, the Seminole War, and more. The museum’s videos, especially, are quite well done. On the top floor is the favorite of adults and kids alike: a replica pirate ship, and actual artifacts from shipwrecks, that’s a heckuva lot of fun to explore (it has a lot of bells and whistles I won’t give away). Most visitors dedicate 2-3 hours to seeing it all, and include a meal at the museum’s eatery, an off-shoot of Columbia Café, the classic Ybor City Cuban restaurant.
