Hotels in Taos
A tiny town with a big tourist market, Taos has thousands of rooms in hotels, motels, condominiums, and bed-and-breakfasts. Many new properties have recently opened, turning this into a buyer's market. In the slower seasons -- January through early February and April through early May -- when competition for travelers is steep, you may even want to try bargaining your room rate down. Most of the hotels and motels are on Paseo del Pueblo Sur and Norte, with a few scattered just east of the town center, along Kit Carson Road. The condos and bed-and-breakfasts are generally scattered throughout Taos's back streets.
During peak seasons, visitors without reservations may have difficulty finding vacant rooms. Taos Chamber of Commerce, 108 S. Kit Carson Rd. (tel. 575/751-8800), might be able to help. If you're looking to hook up to the Internet in this town, head for the plaza, which offers wireless access anywhere you sit.
Southern Rockies Reservations (tel. 866/250-7313; www.taosskitrips.com) will help you find accommodations ranging from bed-and-breakfasts to home rentals, hotels, and cabins throughout Taos, Taos Ski Valley, and the rest of northern New Mexico. It'll also help you arrange package trips for outdoor activities such as skiing, horseback riding, hot-air ballooning, and snowmobiling.
There are two high seasons in Taos: winter (the Christmas-to-Easter ski season, except for Jan, which is notoriously slow) and summer. Spring and fall are shoulder seasons, often with lower rates. The period between Easter and Memorial Day is also slow in the tourist industry here, and many proprietors of restaurants and other businesses take their annual vacations at this time. Book well ahead for ski holiday periods (especially Christmas) and for the annual arts festivals (late May to mid-June and late Sept to early Oct).

El Monte Sagrado
One of the premiere properties in the state, the "Sacred Mountain" resort was opened in 2003 and greatly expanded in 2007. El Pueblo Lodge
The sign and vibe may say "old school," but this budget lodge just north of the plaza doesn't scrimp on comfort. Rooms in the 1940s South Building and in the "Casita," the original 1920s motor lodge, ooze with Southwestern Route 66 atmosphere—the three in the Casita…$Around Town - B&B
Hacienda del Sol
The first thing you notice about the Hacienda del Sol is the magnificent mountain backdrop. Even though it's just off the main drag, the property edges up against Taos Pueblo, which means the scenery is virtually unspoiled. It's easy to see why art patron Mabel Dodge…$$$Around Town - Hotel

Inn on the Rio
There is no shortage of B&Bs in Taos that qualify as quaint, charming, occasionally even adorable. It takes a little something special to rise above the crowd, as the Inn on the Rio does. Maybe it's the old rustling cottonwoods along the bank of the Rio Fernando, up…$$Around Town - B&B
Old Taos Guesthouse B&B
This hacienda-style B&B fills a two-centuries-old adobe home set high on the quiet outskirts of town. Each cozy room has a private entrance; some have fireplaces, mountain views, and kitchens, though the bathrooms tend toward the smaller side. There's a veranda over the…$$Around Town - Hotel
Sagebrush Inn & Suites
This sprawling property about three miles south of town has two main claims to fame: Its location amid the quiet sagebrush (get it?) away from downtown, and the fact that Georgia O'Keeffe stayed here for almost a year in the late 1930s. The inn has been added to and…$$Around Town - Hotel
The Historic Taos Inn
The name is no hyperbole: Some of the buildings that make up the Historic Taos Inn were bought by the town's first physician in 1895, and the guest list has included Greta Garbo and D. H. Lawrence. The fountain in the impressive two-story lobby used to be a town well, and…$$Around Town
