The name is no hyperbole: Some of the buildings that make up the Historic Taos Inn were bought by the town's first physician in 1895, and the guest list has included Greta Garbo and D. H. Lawrence. The fountain in the impressive two-story lobby used to be a town well, and the lobby itself was once an outdoor plaza (now it houses the Adobe Bar, a popular watering hole). The hotel encompasses both the older buildings, where the rooms can be pretty small, and the newer Helen's House, with fancier digs done up in contemporary Southwestern décor like Saltillo tile floors and kiva fireplaces. The whole package radiates a warm Old Taos character, overlaid with a very modern comfort level.
