That hangar-like building near the tiny airport north of Taos isn't for planes: It's actually a microbrewery, restaurant, and live-music venue with both indoor and outdoor stages. The building itself was inspired by the eco-friendly construction techniques used in the off-the-grid "Earthships," half-buried and built from dirt-filled tires, just across the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge to the west. The brewery's design mixes big windows with industrial materials, including many that have been recycled and salvaged. It gets up to 90 percent of its heating from the sun. The dozen or so handcrafted beers on tap are good enough to distract you from the mountain-view sunsets and, even better, they're super-cheap at happy hour.
