Getting There

By Plane -- Most visitors use the airport at Umeå rather than the one at Arvisjaur because of the greater frequency of flights. The airport lies only 455m (1,493 ft.) from the center of Hemavan. You can call SAS for flight information at Umeå (tel. 0770-72-77-27) to see which flight is more convenient for you.

By Train -- Two trains depart daily from Stockholm for the far-northern rail junction of Storuman. Trains from Gothenburg headed for Storuman also are routed through Stockholm. From Storuman, it's necessary to go the rest of the way by bus (1 1/2 hr. or more, depending on the weather). Call tel. 0771/75-75-75 for rail schedules.

By Bus -- From the rail junction at Storuman, five buses per day make the 126km (78-mile) run to the center of Tärnaby. From the airport at Umeå, there are three or four buses a day, but it takes 5 hours. For schedules, call tel. 0200/21-82-18.

By Car -- Take E4 north to Stockholm, transferring onto Route E75 at the junction to Östersund. From here, take Route 88 north to Storuman, then head northwest on E37 to Tärnaby. From Arvidsjaur, head southwest along Route 45 until you reach the junction with E12 heading west.
