Active Pursuits in Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa is far from a major golfing destination, but it does have a small, 9-hole course, considered one of the best in the country. The Villa Elena Country Club (tel. 504/2224-0400; www.villaelena.synthasite.com) is 9km (5 1/2 miles) north of the capital on the road to San Pedro Sula, and in a new residential and ecological reserve area. On the premises are a Mexican restaurant, a bar, and tennis courts.

For the best views of the city, hike up the steep twisting Paseo La Leona of Barrio Buenos Aires, which features a small, grassy park with benches, a playground, and a small cafe. There are a few interesting colonial mansions bordering the park, though all are private residences. If you want to save your strength, you can take a taxi there and walk back down to the center (just avoid doing so after dark).

For yoga classes and spa retreats, there's Yoga's Garden Spa (Carretera a Valle de Angeles Km. 5 1/2; tel. 504/2236-9139; www.yogasgardenspa.com). The well-organized complex in a forested setting outside of the city holds regular yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and belly-dancing classes, as well as offering full spa services. Call ahead for hours and prices or to make a reservation.
