A dozen kilometers or so of white sand beaches backed by lazy palm trees stretch around Tela Bay. The best beach in the city proper is in front of the Hotel Telamar west of the Río Tela, which is open to the public and has beach chairs and umbrellas for rent (L25). In Tela Vieja, the beachside boardwalk has a few restaurants, bars, and craft vendors, though the beach is often dirty and unsafe to leave your valuables. About a 20- to 30-minute walk from the city along the beach, on the eastern end of the bay, the La Ensenada Beach Villas and Resort is fronted by the clearest water and calmest ocean anywhere on the bay. The feel is much more Caribbean here. Outside of town, decent beaches can be found in the Garífuna villages like Tornabé and Miami.
