The town gets very busy on the weekends, so if your stay will include Friday or Saturday night, make reservations well in advance. In addition to the choices noted below, consider two other excellent options just outside of town. Casa Bugambilia, Callejón de Tepopula 007, Valle de Atongo (www.casabugambilia.com; tel. 739/395-0158), is a nine-room hotel property 3km (1 3/4 miles) outside Tepoztlán. Don't confuse this hotel with Posada Bugambilia, a modest hotel in town. The spacious rooms are elegantly furnished with high-end, carved Mexican furniture, and every room has a fireplace. Doubles average 250 pesos, including breakfast. Las Golondrinas, Callejón de Términas 4 (www.mexonline.com/lasgolondrinas.htm; tel. 739/395-0649), is a three-bedroom B&B in the area behind Ixcatepec church; it's so far off the beaten track that even cabdrivers have trouble finding the place. Owner Marisol Fernández has imbued the house with her tranquil, down-to-earth charm; the guest rooms open onto a wraparound terrace that overlooks the garden, a small pool, and the Tepozteco Mountains beyond. Doubles cost 1,550 pesos, including breakfast.
