In the rolling Cotswolds, Tetbury was out of the tourist mainstream until the heir to the British throne and his beautiful bride, Lady Di, took up residence at the Macmillan Place, a Georgian building situated on nearly 141 hectares (350 acres). Then, crowds came here to catch a glimpse of Prince Charles riding horses and Princess Di shopping. (Today, folks keep an eye out for Charles and his second wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.) Though it can't be seen from the road, the nine-bedroom Windsor mansion, Highgrove, is 2.5km (1 1/2 miles) southwest of Tetbury on the way to Westonbirt Arboretum. If you continue out of town on the A433 toward Bath, the first big gate on the right is the entrance to Highgrove. Unlike Buckingham Palace, it can't be visited on most occasions. Actually, it can be visited, but only by an organized group. There is a waiting list of between 3 and 4 years. Any interested party can apply in writing to the Prince of Wales Office, St. James's Palace, London SW1A 1AA.

Tetbury itself has a 17th-century market hall and a number of antiques shops and boutiques. The town's inns weren't cheap before royalty moved in, and the prices certainly have not dropped since then.
