Getting There & Getting Around

Tha Khek is on Rte. 13, the main north-south road, and buses go both ways on a constant basis (buses to Tha Khek depart every hour from Vientiane, Paksan, Savannakhet, and Pakse) The bus station is 3km (2 miles) away from the Mekong near the area of Souksomboun Market. There are plenty of tuk-tuks on hand to take you to the town center.

Although the town is quite sprawling the center is very compact. It is easy to walk anywhere you wish to go. If you do need to go farther afield tuk-tuks are everywhere. You can also hire motorcycles ($7 per day) and bicycles ($2.50 per day) from the Travel Lodge.


Visitor Information & Tours

The Travel Lodge is affiliated with a local travel agent and they can organize tours locally. Green Discovery ( is intending to open an office in Tha Khek soon and is the acknowledged expert in kayaking and trekking. Meanwhile, ask for information at the Inthira Hotel, which is owned by an affiliate company with the same management. You can also contact them at their offices in Vientiane or Pakse before you arrive. Remote Asia ( offers personalized tours in the area and they can be booked online via their website.

Banks & Currency Exchange -- BCEL (Vientiane Rd.; tel. 051/212-686) changes cash and traveler's checks and makes advances on MasterCard and Visa. The Lao Development Bank (Kuvoravong Rd.; tel. 051/212-089) will change cash only.

Internet Access -- There are a number of Internet cafes on Kuvoravong Road leading straight up from the central square to Rte. 13. They are mainly devoted to kids playing computer games, so don't expect peace and quiet.

Post Office -- Tha Khek's Post Office is on Kuvoravong Road.


Tourism Information -- The Tourist Information Office (Thanon Vientiane; tel. 051/212-512) has plenty of information on local trekking options and tour operators, and can put you in touch with an English-speaking guide.
