If you've taken the ferry to Greenport, you've driven by The Blue Canoe Oyster Bar & Grill—formerly The Chowder Pub—at its perfect perch at the foot of the harbor. New owners, of Shelter Island's Vine Street fame, revitalized the space in 2013, keeping all that was right with it, including the wooden booths and bar. Like Greenport itself, which continues to rejuvenate, The Blue Canoe is a thoroughly modern twist on the maritime culinary chowder house classic. The menu offers something for everyone, from the steamed mussles and lobster cioppino to Asian-inspired sandwich (sandos) offerings. The raw bar features three local oysters and a selection of fresh sushi. You will also find Thai and Korean influences, from the Korean-style barbecued ribs to grilled bamboo shrimp and miso-glazed cod. More standard fare includes a shrimp and scallion burger, lobster macaroni and cheese, and a mushroom bolognese for the vegans in the group. Ask for a table outside in warmer weather when you can watch the boats come into port and be sure to save room for the mango creamsicle dessert.
