The Hunt Country's back roads and its portion of the 45-mile Washington & Old Dominion Railroad (W&OD) Trail (tel. 703/729-0596; www.nvrpa.org/parks/wod) bring bicyclists from all over the mid-Atlantic. The W&OD follows an old railroad bed through the heart of the area, crossing South King Street in Leesburg. I've done part of it, and believe me, it's both beautiful and an up-and-down route that can burn your thighs. You might be able to rent wheels in downtown Leesburg from Bicycle Outfitters, 19 Catoctin Circle NE, in the Leesburg Plaza Shopping Center (tel. 703/777-2148; www.bikeoutfitters.com).

Golfers can tee off at the Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and Greg Norman-designed links at Lansdowne Resort. Gary Player designed the course at Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, 3 miles north of Leesburg on U.S. 15 (tel. 703/779-2555 or 703/589-1042; www.raspberryfalls.com). Less expensive are Goose Creek Golf Club, 43001 Golf Club Rd. (tel. 703/729-2500; www.goosecreekgolf.com), and the municipal Brambleton Regional Park Golf Course, 42180 Ryan Rd., in nearby Ashburn (tel. 703/327-3403; www.nvrpa.org).
