Organized Tours in The Hunt Country
The Gray Ghost -- The Hunt Country was the stamping ground of the Confederate raider, Col. John Singleton Mosby, whose hit-and-run exploits earned him the nickname "The Gray Ghost." Today, U.S. 50 is the John S. Mosby Highway, and local residents have dubbed it the John Singleton Mosby Heritage Area. You can get a driving tour brochure explaining historic sights from local tourist info offices or directly from the Mosby Heritage Area, P.O. Box 1497, Middleburg, VA 20118 (tel. 540/687-6681; www.mosbyheritagearea.org). Tour guide Dave Goetz has half-day Mosby's Confederacy Tours (tel. 540/351-6073 or 540/364-9086; www.mosbystours.com), which can be combined into an all-day outing. Call for prices and reservations.
