The town's mascot is "the Big Oak," at the corner of North Crawford and East Monroe streets, in back of the Federal Courthouse and the post office. It's at least 3 centuries old and has been a respected member of the National Live Oak Society since 1936. If anyone attempted to cut it down or harm it in any way, the townspeople would rise up in revolt. The giant is 68 feet tall with a limb spread of 162 feet and a circumference of 24 feet.
