Unless you have an early bus to catch from the main bus station in Qin Cheng, stay in Beidao Qu, which is handier for both the railway station and Maiji Shan. Going against the trend elsewhere, the best hotels in Beidao Qu are near the railway station and the best among them is the two-star Maiji Dajiudian at Tianshui Huoche Zhan Guangchang Xi Ce (tel. 0938/492-0000; ¥136 twin). The hotel has bright, clean rooms (the best are on the sixth floor, facing away from the railway station), an efficient staff, and a restaurant. If you decide to stay in Qin Cheng, the two-star Tianshui Dajiudian, Dazong Lu Nan Kou 1 (tel. 0938/828-9999; fax 0938/821-1301; ¥90-[Yen[192] twin) is the best choice for facilities and location. But if you want to spent the night at Maiji Shan, Zhiwuyuan Zhaodaisuo (tel. 0938/223-1029; ¥100 twin in old wing, ¥280-¥360 cabin) is a real find. The setting is the botanical gardens behind the mountain, amid imposing oak and birch forests, and the cabins are good value -- you can pay by the bed. By car, take a road to the left 720m (2,362 ft.) past the scenic area ticket office and continue uphill for 3km (2 miles), or walk 15 minutes past the Maiji Shan caves.
