I love looking at photographs, and this museum with more 23,000 works in its collection is the best place in town to do so. Its emphasis is on Japanese photography, which accounts for about 70 percent of the museum's collection. Three galleries offer changing exhibitions from Japan and abroad, ranging from historical to cutting-edge contemporary, with at least one usually devoted to the museum's own holdings. Each gallery requires its own admission, though combination tickets are usually available. It's easy to spend an hour or more here, lost in another world.
