Getting There


High-speed RENFE Avant trains run frequently every day. Those departing Madrid’s Atocha railway station for Toledo run daily from 6:50am to 9:50pm; those leaving Toledo for Madrid run daily from 6:50am to 9:30pm. Travel time is approximately 35 minutes. To reach the old city from Toledo’s bus station, take bus 5 to the Plaza de Zocodover (1.40€); a taxi from the station is about 8€).

From Madrid, it’s also feasible to take the bus instead of the train. The main service is provided by Alsa ([tel] 90-242-22-42;www.alsa.es). Buses depart daily from Madrid’s Estación de Plaza Elíptica, Avenida Vía Lusitana, between 6:30am and 11pm at 15- to 30-minute intervals. Travel time is 50 minutes to 1[bf]1/4 hours. A one-way transit costs 5.65€ and can be purchased only at the station. Once you reach Toledo, you’ll be deposited at the Estación de Autobuses, which lies beside the river about 1.2km ([bf]3/4 mile) from the historic center. Although many visitors opt to walk, be ready to climb a hill. Buses 5 and 6 run from the station uphill to Plaza de Zocodover, charging 1.40€ for the brief ride. Pay the driver directly. By car, exit Madrid via Cibeles (Paseo del Prado) and take the N-401 south.
