Hansan-do
Located in the middle of Hallyeo Haesang National Park, Hansan-do is a historically important site. This is where General Yi Sun-shin fought off the Japanese with his turtle ships during the Imjin Waeran Japanese invasion (1592-98). In spite of its history, modern tourists are more attracted to the oysters, pearls, and seaweed grown here. The only place that belies its past history is the Jeseung-dang, a re-creation of Admiral Yi's command headquarters, which were moved from Yeosu and housed here for 4 years, before being moved again to Sebyeong-gwan in Tongyeong. The island's other tribute to the naval war hero is an unfortunate lighthouse at the harbor in the shape of a turtle ship.
