The Planet Traveler is often referred to as Canada's greenest hostel. It's affordable, comfortable, and located near fun neighborhoods, including colorful Kensington Market, Little Italy, Chinatown, and The Annex. This place is a treat—modern, clean, and very well thought out. Bathrooms adjoin dorm rooms. The personal lockers in the dorm rooms have electrical outlets so you can charge your phone overnight without having to worry about theft. The common area has a fireplace, and there is a rooftop bar with a wonderful skyline view (check out the solar panels). The four-story, century-old renovated building utilizes a number of green technologies, from geothermal heating to wastewater heat reclamation. There are dormitory rooms (some with ensuite bathrooms) and private rooms in private wings with shared bathrooms. A step up for a hostel: the beds use comfy memory-foam mattresses, and towels are supplied. We also appreciate all the free benefits which include breakfast (including cereal, fruit, and toast), coffee all day, use of internet terminals, a luggage storage room, and help-yourself rice and popcorn. The lobby has old-fashioned private phone booths for free local calls. On the rooftop level there are free bbq's on Saturday nights in the summer, and free pasta on Saturdays in cool weather. You can rent a bike or a toboggan for $5.
