Fondation Bemberg

Walk east along rue de Metz to reach one of the city’s most important museums. Housed in the magnificent Hôtel Assézat built in 1555, the museum which opened in 1955 provides an overview of five centuries of world-class European art. The first floor takes you through a series of rooms from Renaissance furniture and works by old masters like Van der Weyden and Lucas Cranach to Boucher’s 18th-century landscapes. The 2nd floor offers a wonderful overview of the 19th century with rooms dedicated to the Impressionists, the Fauvists, and Pointillists. German-French collector extraordinaire Georges Bemberg started the collection, donating 331 works including works by Pisarro, Matisse, and Monet. Pierre Bonnard’s gift of his 28 paintings includes his Moulin Rouge.
