Restaurants in Toulouse
Brunch is a big deal in Toulouse, and one of the best places to get it (as well as breakfast and lunch) is Baba Canteen (26 rue de Couteliers; Mon-Fri 8:30am-4:30pm, Sat-Sun 10am-4pm; http://babacanteen.com). Among its offerings are different types of breads topped with the freshest of veggies, labne, perhaps smoked meats or house-fermented pickles; delicious pain perdue (French toast to us); and salads straight from the garden. There will be a line out front, but it’s worth it. For a glam evening out, we also highly recommend the restaurant in the Grand Hotel de l’Opera.

Au Pois Gourmand
Set in a mansion with the types of wooden carvings and balconies that might have covered a colonial house in a far flung corner of the world, Au Pois Gourmand goes well beyond “snow peas” (“pois gourmand”). Menu offerings are usually sumptuous, along the lines of lobster liégeois,…$$$Around Town - Cafe/Tea Room
Bapz
Dainty china, silver teapots that your grandmother might have used, and a collection of odd artifacts suggest an English tea room but undeniable French influences are palpable here (Note: tea at 5pm is 1 hr. late for the true enthusiast). But try brunch and the generous quiches and…$Around Town - Toulousian
Chez Emile
You’ll see far more locals than tourists at Chez Emile, a place as homey as its name. Set in a traditional red-brick house on a busy square, it has a pleasant small town feel, in both the unadorned décor, and the friendliness of the waitstaff. Chef Christophe Fasan’s dishes are all…$$Around Town - Modern French
Chez Michel Sarran
Regarded as the top restaurant in Toulouse, it’s worth the slight journey west to the University district. Master chef Michel Sarran produces dishes that challenge the norm of modern French cooking using imaginative Asian and Middle Eastern spicing: a starter of foie gras, for…$$$Around Town - Modern French
Le Bibent
Originally opened in 1861, right in the heart of Toulouse in the place du Capitole, Le Bibent is a glorious example of a classic brasserie. The huge room has a vaulted ceiling, painted panels, gilding galore, mirrors, chandeliers, and banquette seating. Taken over by starred chef…$$Around Town - Southwestern French
Le Bon Vivre
This popular, welcoming and bustling bistro is also known as Café Cantine du Bon Vivre. Locals simply call this place Huguette after the founder, Huguette Meliet, who now runs it with her daughter, Cathy. The 18th-century mansion features a simple, modern decor where its good,…$Around Town - Toulousian
Le Colombier
Walls of alternating red brick and stone and a wood-beamed ceiling take you back to the origins of this popular restaurant. You’re in the former stables of the Capitole where Alain Lacoste has been delighting locals and visitors since 2007 with his robust southwest France-inspired…$$Around Town
