Trakos
Like a vision from a fairy tale, this dreamy white hilltop castle has pointed turrets and a drawbridge. There’s been a castle here since the 13th century, when the fortification served as an observation point over the surrounding valleys, but it was largely remodeled in Romantic style in the 19th century, when it became a place of pure whimsy. Inside, on the first floor, wood-paneled rooms are furnished as they would have been in the 1800s, and walls are hung with portraits of the former owners, the Drašković family. On the upper floors, you can see medieval weaponry and a couple of tapestries. The landscaped parkland below the castle is a lovely place to wander on a sunny afternoon. It’s especially beautiful in fall, when the trees take on russet hues. The park centers on an artificial lake, which freezes over in winter.
