Refugio de Vida Silvestre Guaimoreto
Similar to Cuero y Salado and the Laguna de los Micos near La Ceiba, Guaimoreto, 5km (3 miles) east of Trujillo, is a large lagoon surrounded in mangrove forest, intersected with canals, and home to abundant wildlife. Migratory birds flock here from November to February. Due to the lack of tourists in Trujillo, there aren't any tour operators that arrange trips here anymore -- you must go to the lagoon and negotiate with a local fisherman for a canoe or boat ride (roughly L285 per 2 hr.). Casa Kiwi (tel. 504/2434-3050; www.casakiwi.com) sometimes will arrange trips here, as well.
