Tulcán has a rather wide range of hotel and restaurant options (although tourists staying here are usually only in transit). Among the best are the Hotel Azteca (tel./fax 06/2960-417), on Bolívar and Atahualpa, offering clean double rooms with cable TV and hot water at around $15 (£10); and the pricier Hotel Sara Espindola (tel. 06/2986-209), on Sucre and Ayacucho, at $70 (£47) per double. Fronting the main Parque de la Independencia, the Sara Espindola gets the nod for its location. For budget travelers, another option is the Hotel Lumar (tel. 06/2980-402), on Sucre and Pichincha, which has doubles, with cable TV, for $12 (£8).

Tip: Hotel rooms fill up fast in Tulcán on weekends, when Colombian shoppers flock to town to take advantage of bargains their slightly stronger currency buys them in Ecuador. Therefore, if you're going to stay here on a weekend, be sure to make reservations.
