The moment you enter the lush gardens at this small hideaway, you can tell the owners pay close attention to the environment. Gardens provide privacy for the rooms, all with hammocks on terraces, orthopedic mattresses, skylights, and toiletries made by a local collective. The French owners pay close attention to their guests, wandering through the dining rooms during meals, including the full breakfast included in the rate. The pool wasn’t clear when I was there, but I’m told it normally is.  The beach is about a 5-minute drive away, but the comforts here—A/C, 24-hour electricity, powerful showers, hairdryers—outweigh the lack of sea view. The owners raise melipona (stingless) bees at the far end of the property to provide honey for local collectives. The honey is used in bath products and bottled for use in its natural state—the shampoo is fabulous.
