The Ice Cream Scoop
Sandwich’s most classic ice cream shop is Twin Acres Ice Cream Shoppe, 21 Route 6A, Sandwich (tel. 508/888-0566), which has a wide variety of flavors in hard and soft serve. With its red, white, and blue bunting, this place is right out of a Norman Rockwell illustration.
Falmouth residents are the beneficiaries of a struggle for ice cream bragging rights: Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium, at 209 Main St., in the center of town (tel. 508/548-7878), draws crowds even in winter, late into the evening (it’s open 9am to 11pm). They come for the homemade ice cream, not to mention the hand-dipped candies showcased in a wraparound display. It’s the only place on Cape Cod where you can get surprisingly yummy lobster ice cream; customers can watch the ice cream being made. The competition is Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream, at 326 E. Falmouth Highway, East Falmouth (tel. 508/457-1060), whose proprietor, the cheerful, blond Smitty, is an ice cream man straight out of central casting.
