House or Condo Rental on Utila

The increasing number of cabins and beach houses being built on Utila has led to a glut of properties that sit empty for much of the year. Some business-savvy individuals have turned to renting out their vacation homes while they are away. Most have cleaning services, full kitchens, and space for entire families. They may lack restaurants and a concierge, but make up for it with personal touches and great value. There are dozens of properties to choose from. Here are three that are recommended:

  • Island Life Tours (tel. 504/9937-5437; www.islandlifetours.com; L950-L2,280/$50-$120 per night, with discounts for week-long stays) rents out several properties on the cays and on the south shore of the island that are unbelievably inexpensive and quite charming. One sits underneath the Harbour House restaurant, while another on Rocks Cay sits on its own private little islet -- with a walkway to the cay, a private dock, and BBQ area -- and can sleep up to 10.
  • Laguna Vista (tel. 504/3344-9545; www.vrbo.com/229936; L2,850/$150 per night, with a 3-night minimum) is perhaps the most luxurious rental option on Utila, though it isn't right on the beach. The two-bedroom spread has a beautiful pool area with a Jacuzzi and your own thatched-roof party champa. Compared to a rental in, say, Florida or the Bahamas with these amenities, it's a steal.
  • Life's a Beach Villa (tel. 504/2333-4139; www.destinationutila.com; L4,750/$250 per day, L28,500/$1,500 per week) is a three-bedroom beachfront villa with 2 1/2 baths. The contemporary house is Wi-Fi ready and pimped out with modern amenities like flat-screen LCD TVs, a speaker system, a Weber gas grill, and a wine refrigerator.
