Frommer's Staff

This castle was constructed between 1677 and 1687 for Prince Willem Adriaan van Nassau. Its plain brick facade conceals a lavish interior designed by French architect Daniël Marot, who was responsible for decorating Het Loo palace. Many of his baroque murals and ceiling paintings have survived, and ornate gilded wood paneling and stucco. The grand drive is lined by elegant houses belonging to the Hernhutters, a Protestant religious order that had its origins in Bohemia and Moravia (today's Czech Republic) in the first half of the 18th century. The large formal gardens were relandscaped in the 19th century to create a pleasant park.
