The large Hvoll Hostel, Skatárhreppur (tel. 487-4785; fax 487-4890; www.hostel.is; 25 units without bathrooms; Mar-Oct 4,750kr ($76/£39) double; 1,700kr-2,200kr/$27-$35/£14-£18 sleeping-bag accommodation; AE, DC, MC, V; closed Nov-Feb), has clean and functional rooms at a pretty riverside location 25km (16 miles) east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and 45km (28 miles) west of Skaftafell National Park, on an unnumbered road 2.5km (1 1/2 miles) south of the Ring Road; look for the Hvoll sign. If you're traveling by bus, you can arrange for the proprietors to pick you up at the junction, and then ask the bus driver to drop you there.
